Chapter 14

I started the morning coffee, and I heard Grammie fiddling around her room, so I went to check on her. Knocking at her door, I ask, “Do you need any help?”

“No, I’ve got it. Just taking it slow,” she said.

“Okay, you are hungry, right? I’m going to make a big breakfast this morning since you ate so little last night for dinner.”

“Sounds good. I’ll be out in a few minutes,” she said. I heard her shuffle towards her bathroom.

I went back to the kitchen, and I opened up the fridge. I wasn’t awake enough to fiddle with making waffles, so scrambled eggs and toast it was. I fixed a glass of water and the medication the doctor had given us for Grammie, putting them by her plate.

I noticed Grammie looked much better when she got to the table. While she didn’t look ‘well-rested’ yet, she didn’t look as fragile as she had when she was in the hospital. I took that as a sign that she was slowly getting better.

We ate our meal. I ate like I had a big day ahead of me. Grammie finished her normal amount, which made me happy. I got up the clear the table and heard Grammie sigh.

“I have to go to the law firm today,” I said. “The deputy is right in the driveway, making it clear to all that they should not try to mess with you. Plus, Mel is going to be out at the carriage house to supervise the instillation of the computers, and Mrs. Harris said she would come by to see how you are doing. Would that be okay?”

She nodded, but I could tell there was something on her mind.

“Is there anything else you need, Grammie? I know we haven’t talked about everything yet. I was waiting until you were ready. So, you will let me know when?”

“Now is good…” Then, she hesitated. “But I do have one question first.”

“Ask away.”

“I was wondering if you could tell me straight away if you have seen her?” Her voice cracked with grief.

I was taken aback by the question. I knew that Grammie knew about my abilities. Her husband, my grandfather, had them as well. But she has never asked me about any contact I may have had - not even with him.

“No, or not really. I’m sorry, Grammie.” I reached across the table and took her hand. “I haven’t seen her to talk to her, but I haven’t looked for her much either. I did get a glimpse of her on her porch that night it happened. Also, Nikki, Mel, and I went to look for the cat. I snuck upstairs, but Mae wasn’t there. I didn’t get the cat yet either.”

“Okay, Ms. Buttons is probably hiding. She doesn’t like people much. Have you heard where they’ve taken her body? Do they have her in the local morgue, or has the state taken her?”

“I don’t know. I can find out, though.”

“Please do, dear,” she said. “I’d like to know when we can start planning the funeral.
